Best Dog Cooling Mats in the UK 2021

Dog cooling mats are an essential item for any dog owner. For many breeds, they’re absolutely critical for health and protection from strenuous heat.

Cooling mats are simple yet clever and effective. They use a gel that efficiently absorbs heat from your dog or pet’s body. Once your dog sits on the mat, the gel moulds around its body and wicks away heat which then disperses through the gel.

All dogs can get hot easily but some breeds are particularly vulnerable to overheating. Younger dogs and pups are also generally poor at cooling down and will really need a heat mat during summer.

In this article, we will cover the best dog cooling mat brands in the UK and what to consider when buying a dog cooling mat.

Best Overall – Scruffs Self-Cooling Mat Blue

Check Price on Amazon

By leading brand Scruffs, these self-cooling mats are very well-made and come in a variety of sizes ranging from small to medium, large and extra-large. That’s very handy if you often find smaller mats are insufficient for your dog.

Like the vast majority of cooling mats, these mats are filled with a non-toxic gel-like substance that absorbs and disperses heat efficiently across the mat.

Scruffs suggest that the mat is naturally 5 – 10C degrees below room temperature, even without refrigeration. Like with other mats, you can really feel how cool the mat is by feeling it with your hand – it’s quite impressive.

If you do need the mat to be even colder, e.g. during a heatwave and you can tell your dog is suffering, then there’s nothing to say you can’t refrigerate the mat.

This mat is actually thicker than most too, so it should prove comfortable for your dog to sit down on without extra cushioning.

The Scruffs Self-Cooling Mat (L) Blue has two sides, one soft fabric and the other non-porous wipe-clean plastic. If you leave the mat for one hour then it will return to its natural cooler temperature. During very hot weather, you can use two and cycle between them.

Overall, an excellent cooling mat that comes in 3 sizes. The XL mat measures 119.4 x 1.3 x 74.9 centimetres and the L mat measures 91.4 x 1.3 x 68.6 centimetres, both are suitable for a variety of medium-sized, large and extra-large dogs.

Like most mats, it uses a non-toxic gel filling to rapidly absorb and disperse heat from your dog. It’s very effective and can be used without refrigeration.

It also folds up 3 times, ideal for carrying in the car, on holiday, down the park, etc.

The material is also scratch and wear-resistant, but not chew proof, so you will need to watch chewy dogs around the mat to make sure they don’t gnaw away at it!

This mat is pretty big at 90 x 50 cm, which should be sufficient for all smaller breeds as well as many larger breeds. It’s thick enough but not the thickest, but should still be comfortable to sit on.

Check Price on Amazon

Unconvinced by the size of other mats? Measuring a mighty 96 x 81cm, the Seekavan Dog Cooling Mat Extra Large is a true behemoth, suitable for a wide variety of XL dogs and super-sized hounds.

Like other mats, the Seekavan Dog Cooling Mat Extra Large uses the same non-toxic gel filling to rapidly cool dogs.

The mat is pressure-activated, so will work to disperse heat as soon as your dog lies down on it. The gel absorbs and disperses heat, and it’s effective without refrigeration. In extraneous heat, you can refrigerate the mat for extra cooling.

Despite being a large mat, it’s easy to fold up and will fold into 4 quarters for easy transportation. The upshot of being so easy to fold, however, is that the mat itself is quite thin at 0.3mm.

But even so, it cools effectively and can always be doubled up with a second mat, or folded in two so it lasts longer.

The material itself is durable and waterproof – very easy to wipe clean with a cloth or under a tap. Of course, the main headline here is the size of the mat, and the square shape is also handy if your dog wants to lie down with its legs out.

Features

  • Measures 96 x 81cm

  • Wipe-clean material
  • Foldable design
  • Doesn’t require refrigeration

  • Easy to fold and carry
  • Works well without refrigeration
  • Durable and easy to clean

Cons

  • Relatively thin compared to other mats (but compensates in size)

Bottom Line

Cooling Mat Buyer’s Guide

Dog cooling mats are all fairly similar to each other, but do differ in some crucial ways:

Size

For sure the primary differentiating factor between dog mats is their size.

Of course, you don’t need to squeeze your whole dog onto one to gain some sort of benefit. For massive dogs like Malamutes, Great Danes or Mastiffs, you could always grab two mats and place them side-by-side.

Some mats are also more rectangular than square, which is good for placing in a car or similar, but might be less suitable for dogs that like to lay with their legs splayed.

Material

Most dog cooling mats are made from non-porous, wipe-clean material filled with cooling gels.

These are the most effective mats for cooling purposes and by far the most popular. Some mats have two sides, a softer, fleece side and a wipe-clean cool mat side.

Additionally, most mats are fairly durable and scratch-resistant but few are chew-proof (and a determined dog can chew through most things). The gel inside mats is non-toxic, but it’s still not ideal if your dog bites through to the soft gel interior.

Even if you need to place a thin blanket on top of the mat, it’ll still offer decent cooling and you could refrigerate the blanket too if you’re concerned it isn’t enough.

It’s worth noting that mats can be repaired in the same way you’d repair a bike tyre or air bed, using a puncture repair kit.

Refrigeration

Most mats don’t need to be refrigerated to work – they’re often some 5 to 10C degrees cooler than the average room temperature just as they are.

If you place them on stone or other hard floors then they’ll get even cooler. In extreme heat, you can refrigerate most cooling mats.

But beware, if you plunge them to super-cool temperatures then your dog might not voluntarily lie on them!

Does My Dog Need a Cooling Mat?

The short answer is yes, all dogs benefit from cooling mats.

Heatstroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration can all sneak up on dogs, and cats too, largely due to their thick fur and inability to sweat in the same way we do.

Cooling mats are inexpensive and valuable items to have throughout warmer weather. Even if your dog tolerates heat well, an intense workout could cause overheating.

Older dogs, dogs with very thick coats and dogs with short noses are all particularly in-need of cooling mats throughout summer.

Owners of Shih Tzus, pugs, boxers, bulldogs and other short-nosed dogs should keep a mat handy throughout the year for use after exercise. Winter dogs like huskies, malamutes and St Bernards also need mats even in milder weather.

Your dog might voluntarily seek out a cooling mat, especially when placed in his/her bed. But, if they don’t warm to it, so to speak, then you can tempt them onto one with treats, or just lift them on it and keep them occupied until they’ve sufficiently cooled.

Summary

6 brilliant cooling mats here, all of which work through the same tried-and-tested cooling gel technology.

The Scruffs Self-Cooling Mat (L) Blue is dual-sided, durable and works very well in extreme heat – the best overall. It’s pretty thick and comfy too, which is an added bonus.

At 90 x 50cm, the HueLiv Dog Cooling Mat is one of the larger mats on the list, but the largest is the Seekavan Dog Cooling Mat Extra Large at 96 x 81cm. This is probably the best option for bigger dogs, but it’s also to fold up too so is suitable for any dog or pet.

The smaller RSPCA Pet and Dog mat is ideal for puppies and the ADEPTNA Self Cooling Gel Mat is similarly sized and represents a great budget choice. Both are best-suited to smaller dogs and pups.

The well-reviewed Lokheira Dog Cooling Mat Large is yet another superb dog cooling mat – some awesome choices on offer here.
