Many think electric driveway gates are only needed for large detached properties that need heavy-duty security gates.
However, in the last couple of years prices have been dropping – meaning more and more people are getting these types of gates installed.
But how much can you expect to pay for these sorts of gates? Our article will cover average prices from quotes we received as well as the most common reasons that affect the costs.
Installation Costs
The prices below were sourced from 18 different suppliers. These are inclusive of VAT and include installation.
Price Range | Cost |
---|---|
Average | £6,000 |
Typical Range | £4,200 - £7,000 |
Cheapest - Most Expensive | £2,100 - £16,000 |
Factors Affecting the Cost
There are many issues that can change the average prices. Here are some things to bear in mind:
What’s the Size of the Opening?
Both the height and length of the gate will increase the cost.
What is the Expected Number of Times the Gates Will Be Used?
If you expect to use your gate on average a lot more than an average person would, you’ll need a motor that can handle more operations. It’s quite common within the industry to put inadequate motors that can’t handle the amount of opening and closing required.
What is the Material of the Posts?
Most contractors offer either metal or timber posts. Generally, you’ll pay more for metal posts. Posts with a paint finishing will also cost more.
Type of Gate Mechanic
The two main types of gate mechanic are swing and sliding gates.
Swing gates are the most common. They are essentially two gates that swing out to provide access. If the design is the same, they are the cheapest. However, they can’t be used if the driveway is on a slope or if there is uneven ground. There must also be sufficient space for the gates to swing into. You can have both single or double swing gates – double gates will cost more.
Sliding gates are attached to a gatepost and are more expensive than swing gates.
Is there a Power Source Nearby?
A contractor will need to know where the nearest power source is. Can they dig up the area to the power source from the gate?
Do You Need to Communicate with the Gate from the House?
This would be an optional extra. GSM Intercom unit with keypad can cost £1000-£1200 including VAT.
What are the Ground Conditions Like?
There are a number of ground issues that could cause an increase in installation costs such as:
- Sloped ground can cause issues with swing gates
- Drains or services in the way can cause problems
- Whether the driveway is tarmac or pebbled.
