Mortar is essential to hold bricks and blocks together. If the mortar is damaged or worn down, then your home could have issues with things such as damp.
Repointing is the process of removing and replacing the mortar. It can help keep the structural integrity of the home intact and offer extra visual appeal.
For old homes, the extra durability of new mortar can improve the durability of the walls and avoid damp issues that happen more frequently with older properties.
This article will cover the costs you can expect to pay for reporting and factors that can affect the price of repointing.

Factors That Affect the Cost
Condition of Existing Wall
This will affect how much cleaning is required before the joints are repointed. Plant growth is usually the most common thing that needs to be removed from a wall.
Roughly £0.50 per m² is typically allowed to clean the wall within the prices above for labour time but this will obviously increase if more cleaning is needed.
Roughly £16 is factored into the prices above to rake out joints at 30mm deep as well. If these are in poor condition or take longer to rake for any reason, then extra labour costs will be factored in.
Height of Existing Wall
The main cost addition here will be scaffolding. Our scaffolding price guide has more in-depth costings, but expect to pay an extra £40 – £200 per day depending on the amount of scaffolding required.
If any repointing work needs to be done at height, this will dramatically increase the costs. For example, repointing chimney costs will be far higher then the figures quoted previously.
